METAL “a new sphere” is a musical and sound synthesis of culture: rock, radio art, ambient, electronic, classical, dance, soundscapes, folk, jazz, spiritual, mixtapes, fusion). The idea is to work with “musical sound information”, using new media and the Internet as a search and research support.

INFO
Veneno’s new monthly show is "METAL" by our Argentinian friend Rubén Tolosa. This self taught music researcher, DJ and music lover has a long term connection with music and radio transmission, beginning back in 1991.
His newest project "METAL" interacts with many genres, passing from classical and jazz to dance music. The idea behind his show is to work with what is currently called "musical-sound information", using new media and the Internet as a research base.

As it is his first show, we have the pleasure of interviewing Ruben to contextualize his new show at Veneno.

How and where do you usually record your mixes?
Hello, as the entire Veneno community is around, there was a time when I decided to sit down and be a search engine and fisherman in the networks, I work in and from my home, with a notebook, but social networks are useful for searches for musical information and sonorous. The idea is to use the minimum technically: a cool old school edit, and the cell phone recorder.

What are your main musical influences?
Today, I could speak of a musical, philosophical and aesthetic Master: Gustavo Cerati. There is much more, it is almost impossible for me to name them, but for a couple of years, the influence moved to radios around the world: The Lot Radio, Red Light Radio, NTS Radio, Radio Tsonami, Kiosko Radio, Dublab, Wave Farm, 20ft Radio, Veneno, Mondonero, Internet Public Radio, Radio Rueda, Eterogenia Radio, HÖR, Reform Radio, Kunstradio, Radio Papesse, La Tribu.

Can you talk more about the idea behind "METAL"?
"METAL" is a synthesis of everything I did at the level of searches for genres and styles, it would be like joining or mixing two different vegetables or flowers, of different shapes, colors and perfumes. But I also feel that the name came to me as something that has not yet happened or is happening, as something between mystical and apocalyptic. I always imagined myself to be the character of a novel, like a mixture of Bowie and The Little Prince in a devastated and desolate world. So I listen to music haha.

You mentioned "musical sound information" as one of the ideas behind "METAL". Can you explain more about this concept?
The concept was invented by Simon Reynolds I think, disparagingly talking about the mp3 and the amount of musical information we have access to, so since it didn't seem like that to me (I admire Reynolds), I decided to do my reading and redouble the bet, I live in the third world, Argentina, just now vinyl is being re-released here, so, fuck off, the mp3 gave me the opportunity to get to know many sounds: UbuWeb is a great tool.

How do you choose the tracks for your mixes?
The idea is that the genres are as opposite as possible: worldmusic, mixtape, jazz, rock culture, sound art, soul, classical, electronic, healing music, dj culture, experimental, radioart, folk, soundscape, mascara, resonance, ambient, new-age music, etc.

What to expect from 2020?
I think that the dj has already been consolidated as an artist-curator, it is an aesthetic fact that could get inside everyone, and streaming served it and online radios also consolidated as a place, a space for global and collective exchange. A beautiful space, a new sphere: METAL.
